After Eight

“After Eight”  (Ionicland Daisy)
DOB: 13-1-2015 near Birmingham

Together with our adopted dog Kasper, who sadly passed away in 2015, After Eight is my absolute favourite of all times and I love her to bits.
She has the best character I’ve ever seen in a dog. Always happy, wagging her tail, cuddly, afraid of nothing, extremely friendly to every creature – be it human or canine – she is always right by my side, willing to work. Needless to say, she is also very intelligent.
Sadly, she’s got a serious  and chronic health problem: Her mitral valve is malfunctioning and therefore we will never breed her. In our everyday routines, she hasn’t shown any symptoms so far but her lifespan will be very short. Eight is on medication and gets a check-up at the cardiologist every 3 months.

Update Eight, January 2018:

At the age of 10 months, our Eight was diagnosed with a severe mitral valve malfuction. On the murmur scale from zero to 6 she was then at 5.5. Her life expectancy was extremely low. Because there was a very small chance that her deformed valve was caused by bacteria she was put on antibiotics for a long time in addition to regular heart medication. Luckily, this turned out to be just the right approach! Now, two years further on, she is doing fine. Of course, the heart murmur didn’t get less, and the mitral valve didn’t “heal”, BUT the cardio data hadn’t changed AT ALL.

What does that tell us? The deformity must have been caused by bacteria. Some other circumstances also point to a bacterial infection rather than the hereditary degenerative form. Firstly: At the age of 4 months, there was NO heart murmur, and at the next check-up, it was already REALLY bad. Secondly: After getting treatment and antibiotics the damage didn’t get any worse, which would have been the case if it had been degenerative. And thirdly: We consulted a cardiologist who has seen many cases of mitral valve problems in humans and she said that the way the valve is deformed is almost always caused by bacteria.

SOOOO it’s very, very unlikely that this is an inherited condition. 😀
